Man City 1-1 Everton: Wayne Rooney scores 200th Premier League goal in feisty draw

This was supposed to be about Manchester City opening their new season at home with fireworks off the pitch, pyrotechnics on it, a shiny new team and the ‘Tunnel Club’ for VIP supporters to get a glimpse of Pep Guardiola and his players as they prepare to steam-roller opponents. And they will do that plenty of times this season.

A goal down and reduced to 10-men in the first-half they produced an astonishingly relentless attacking display, with Guardiola bringing on high-calibre substitutes, capped by a glorious volley from one of them: Raheem Sterling. But that volley only salvaged a point.

Instead this game was about another club and an even more exclusive one at that. It was about Wayne Rooney joining the ‘200 Club’ as the 31-year-old striker became only the second player to score that number of goals in the 25 years of the Premier League era, behind Alan Shearer on 260. It appeared it would be even more than that with Everton heading towards a second successive 1-0 victory, with Rooney scoring the only goal in their opening day win as well, until City’s pressure finally told.
